About the Starlet
About The Toyota Starlet
The Toyota Starlet is a car that was launched in South Africa in 1985 to replace the similar Corolla. It came in two sizes, a 3-door hatchback and a 5-door liftback. Although there were no mechanical differences between the engines, the 3-door hatchback was available with either a 1.3 L or 1.5 L engine, while the 5-door liftback only had the 1.5 L engine. The 1.3 L engine came with standard 5-speed manual transmission (4 & 5-speed manuals were optional), while automatic transmission was available only with the larger engine.
The Toyota Starlet was manufactured by Toyota between 1980 and 1994. It was available as a 3-or 4-door hatchback. The range of engines fitted included petrol and diesel, and they were available in Petrol 2T (1242 cc) – M (10), Diesel 2T (1335 cc) – P (1) or P (4). The engine codes were 1A, 1B and 1D for Petrols; 1A1, 1B1, 1C1 and 1D1 for Diesels.
Common parts sold on the Toyota Starlet
Toyota Starlet Engine Block
The function of engine block is to seal cylinders while accepting airflow from the intake manifold for each combustion chamber and distributing that throughout the crankcase via a separate branch pipe. The engine block also houses many components such as: piston assemblies, crankshaft, spark plugs, intake and exhaust valves (some models), camshaft(s) (some models), oil pan (some models). Common problems are worn out engine blocks and the block being cracked.
Toyota Starlet Piston
The function of a piston is to seal the combustion chamber off from the crankcase and also to push down on the crankshaft through a connecting rod. When an engine is running, pistons move up and down in cylinders due to a rotating crankshaft. This movement of pistons causes circular motion that provides rotational energy which then turns wheels. Pistons are machined cast parts that have three main components: a crown, a skirt and wrist pin bore. Common problems with this part include being worn out, being cracked or broken along with replacement being required if it has been damaged too much by vibration or impact during use.
Toyota Starlet Cylinder Head
Most engines have a cylinder head that sits on top of the engine block. It is usually bolted to the top of the engine. The term “cylinder head” was coined as a means of distinguishing between those parts which are part of the air/exhaust system and those which are not, because it houses all valves for cylinders from where combustion takes place within the cylinders. This part has been known to be replaced due to either having insufficient power output or because it has been damaged by severe use or impact during use. Common problems include a small crack in a cylinder head or a used up valve stem seal being worn out, requiring replacement.
Toyota Starlet Crankshaft
A crankshaft turns the camshaft through a connecting rod which then turns the crankpin on the other end. This provides rotational motion that then turns wheels. A crankshaft is made up of several parts including: main bearings, main bearing sets, connecting rods, thrust washers, oil slinger (location varies), flywheel or flexplate (location varies) and throws. Common problems include being worn out making it unable to turn over correctly, being cracked or broken along with replacement being required if it has been badly affected by impact during use.
Toyota Starlet Camshaft
A camshaft works with a chain or gears in order to open and close valves when theons move up and down. A camshaft is usually made out of steel or aluminium. It may have lobes machined into it that are referred to as “cam followers” which then operate valves. Common problems include when the bearings are worn causing a rattling during operation, when the lobe tips are badly worn causing poorer valve timing and when its gear fails causing poor performance and requiring replacement (if any damage occurs).
Toyota Starlet Oil Pan
An oil pan is a closed-end cylindrical reservoir that holds lubricating oil for an internal combustion engine. The main purpose of the oil pan is to collect oil from other parts such as: crankshaft (via crankcase), camshaft, lifters, rocker arms, pushrods and valve train. It also collects oil that is left over from the last pass through the engine which has not all drained out of other components yet. Common problems include being worn out, cracking or getting too much damage during use.

Toyota Starlet Grille
A grille is a series of horizontal bars that can also contain a mesh material. It allows cool air into the engine bay and assists with cooling by allowing hot air to escape from behind it. The fan pulls air through the radiator at one end and forces some of this air through the cooling fins as well as pushing some along way past some heat exchangers such as: power steering pump, air conditioner pump, alternator and A/C dryer. Common problems include very bad damage due to impact during use or corrosion making too much holes in the metalwork which requires replacement (also see: “body” for fenders).
Toyota Starlet Bonnet
The bonnet is also referred to as a “hood” or a “coffin lid”. It is the part of the car that covers the engine from view, but does not normally have any aerodynamic effects. Common problems include being badly dented due to impact during use or badly scratched and requiring replacement (also see: “body” for fenders).
Toyota Starlet Headlights
The headlights are lights on your vehicle that allow you to see while driving at night. They also help other drivers see you on the road. Common problems include being broken due to impact during use along with needing replacements if they have been either smashed or just worn out.
Toyota Starlet Tail Light
The taillight is the red light that appears on the back of your vehicle. It shows other road users and law enforcement personnel your rear position so as to avoid potential collisions, traffic citations and injuries. Common problems include being broken due to impact during use along with needing replacements if they have been either smashed or just worn out.
Toyota Starlet Radiator
A radiator is a component of an internal combustion engine’s cooling system. It is usually made from several metal tubes and fins that are welded together to form a “cage” or “radiator core”. Most modern radiators have a built-in fan on the back side which blows air over the outside of the tubes, forcing hot air to exit out the top where it can be either recirculated by being drawn back down into the engine through a small opening in front or vented outdoors away from other people in order so as not to burn them in case they come in contact. Common problems include leaking coolant due to rusting, overheating after time because it has worn out requiring replacement (also see: “body” for fenders) or very bad damage due to impact during use along with needing replacement (also see: “body” for fenders).
Toyota Starlet Gearbox
The gearbox is where the transmission meets the engine. It allows your car to move forward or backward by varying the speed at which it turns over. Common problems include being broken due to rusting, overheating after time because it has worn out requiring replacement (also see: “body” for fenders) or very bad damage due to impact during use along with needing replacement (also see: “body” for fenders).
Toyota Starlet Diff
A differential transfers power from the driveshaft and central axle and rotates each wheel individually so that they can turn at different speeds while cornering. Common problems include leaking oil due to rusty bolts, overheating after time because it has worn out requiring replacement (also see: “body” for fenders) or very bad damage due to impact during use along with needing replacement (also see: “body” for fenders).
Toyota Starlet Doors
The doors are sections on your vehicle used for transporting passengers and cargo. This is usually the front and rear of the vehicle. Common problems include being broken due to impact during use, rusting and needing replacement (also see: “body” for fenders).
Toyota Starlet Fender
A fender is a part of a car which covers parts of the engine such as brake drums. Common problems include if it has been badly dented during use or has been badly scratched and needs replacement (also see: “body” for hood).
Toyota Starlet Bootlid
The bootlid is the back of your car’s trunk. Common problems include if it has been badly dented due to impact during use, rusty bolts along with not being able to open or close it.
Toyota Starlet Front Windscreen
A windshield is a windscreen which allows you to view in front of your vehicle without getting wet. It also keeps passengers safe in case anything hits it. Common problems include being broken due to rusting along with needing replacements if they have been either smashed or just worn out.
Toyota Starlet Front Bumper
The front bumper is the part of your vehicle that bolts onto the front end to protect it from any damage during an accident. It also helps with airflow around the vehicle by minimizing turbulence. Common problems include being broken due to impact during use, rusting along with needing replacement (also see: “body” for fenders).
Toyota Starlet Aircon Pump
A car air conditioning system cools the vehicle by taking heat out of the inside air. Common problems include if it has been smashed due to impact during use along with not being able to work.
Toyota Starlet Shock Absorbers
Shock absorbers (dampers) are hydraulic devices designed to smooth out rough roads by converting kinetic energy into another form of energy which is heat loss through the engine and exhaust pipes. They’re also used in vehicles because they help drivers maintain control over their cars when driving fast on bumpy roads or down hills. Common problems include leaking oil due to rusting, overheating after time because it has worn out requiring replacement (also: “body” for fenders).
Toyota Starlet Window Mechanism
A window mechanism is where the window glass moves up and down in a car. Common problems include not being able to move, having rusting bolts or just being broken due to impact during use along with needing replacement (also see: “body” for fenders).
Toyota Starlet Door Mirrors
Door mirrors are the inside of the door frame which allow you to view out from your vehicle without any obstructions by attaching a mirror onto it. Common problems include being badly scratched because of bad cleaning after high usage, being loose if they were attached incorrectly and/or needing replacement if they have been smashed (also see: “body” for rear bumper).
