About the Hilux
About The Toyota Hilux
The Toyota Hilux is arguably the most successful vehicle in South Africa, with the current generation of pickup and bakkie models having been on sale since 2012. It has been a spate of models that has proven to be a huge success for the brand because it caters for an affluent market that is attracting more buyers each year through the segment’s increasing popularity. With a new generation Supra also on sale in 2018 and due to be launched locally soon, there are expectations that sales will continue to rise well into the next decade because of increasing demand for mid-size 4×4 SUVs that meet a growing desire for more.
Built for insane levels of durability, it not only conquers the toughest terrain but is also capable of carrying heavy loads. The type of engine fitted into this vehicle depends on the model you choose. The 1KD-FTV, 2L and 3L-FE engines are fitted in the four door Toyota Hilux while the 2L and 4l engine drive the pick ups. The 4l-FE engine is the biggest of the three engines and it delivers power of 173 kW.
The 1KD-FTV Turbo Diesel Engine has turbocharger with intercooler fitted to control exhaust gas temperature. The type of engine that was first introduced in 2005 which is known as the 1GD-FTV has just been improved with better performance which is the 1KD-FTV fitted in the current model Hilux.
The type of diesel engine used in the Toyota Hilux 2l, 3L and 4L are gasoline engines that are very economical. These types of engines are popularly known as petrol turbos that are known for excellent fuel economy while delivering strong power. The type of engine that was first introduced in 1985 is known as the 1B which has been improved over time to what it is today.
The 1HD-FTE Turbo Diesel Engine has turbocharger fitted with intercooler control exhaust gas temperature. Just like its predecessor, this engine comes with oil cooled EGR cooler and exhaust gas recirculation. This engine type has been in production for over three decades now. The fourth generation is known as the 1HZ, 5th Gen 1HD-FTE is the sixth Generation and 7th gen is the current model which was introduced in 2010 with a five speed manual or four speed automatic transmission system for pick ups while on the 4 door models it came with a five speed manual or four speed automatic transmission system.
Common Toyota Hilux Parts For Sale
Toyota Hilux Engine block
The function of engine block is to seal cylinders while accepting airflow from the intake manifold for each combustion chamber and distributing that throughout the crankcase via a separate branch pipe. The engine block also houses many components such as: piston assemblies, crankshaft, spark plugs, intake and exhaust valves (some models), camshaft(s) (some models), oil pan (some models).
Different cars have different requirements when it comes to replacing parts on their car engines. For example, most common car engines need the engine block, pistons, crankshaft, camshaft(s), oil pan. However, not all engines need all these parts replaced in most cases.
Toyota Hilux Pistons
The function of a piston is to seal the crankcase while rotating with the crankshaft and moving up and down within the cylinder bore. Pistons are constructed from a cylindrically shaped metal rod which has one end closed by a cap known as a crown. It also allows air and fuel into each of the combustion chambers via valves placed in between the top of the piston and cylinder head closest to it. The exhaust gases then escape out through an opening at the bottom where they pass on their way through an exit valve (exhaust valve) on some models.
Toyota Hilux Cylinder head
The function of a cylinder head is to seal the cylinders while allowing airflow into each combustion chamber. Each cylinder has one open end on an engine that is closed by the cylinder head, which is bolted onto the top of the piston via studs (or bolts in some models) and gasket. It also houses many components such as spark plugs, intake and exhaust valves (some models), camshaft(s)(some models), oil pan (some models).
Toyota Hilux Crankshaft
The function of a crankshaft is to transfer power through connecting rods attached to pistons moving up and down within their respective cylinders. A crankshaft rotates continuously around its axis it turning a flywheel on some models. A crankshaft can be constructed from a metal rod with a number of offset divisions called main journals or crankpins, which rotate around the axis-axis and allow for its variable rotation speed.
Toyota Hilux Camshaft
The function of a camshaft is to open and close valves that allow air into the combustion chambers as well as fuel via an injector on some models. It is attached to the end of one or more crankshafts, so it rotates at half the speed of the crankshaft(s), allowing for its timing profiles adjusted by rotating each camshaft itself in relation to each cylinder where valves have been placed between the cylinder head and top of the piston closest to it.
Toyota Hilux Valves
The function of valves is to open and close intake and exhaust ports that allow air into each combustion chamber, as well as fuel via an injector on some models. The intakes are placed between the cylinder head and top of the piston closest to it; while the exhausts are placed between the cylinder head and bottom of the piston furthest away from it. Valve timing is adjusted by rotating camshaft(s) in relation to the crankshaft(s).
Toyota Hilux Oil pan
The function of an oil pan is to seal around crankshaft bearings, pick up oil via suction from sumps (oil pans) at the bottom of each crankcase. It holds up to 1-2 liters of oil depending on the model.
Common Toyota Hilux Body Parts Needing Replacment
Toyota Hilux Grille
The function of a grille is to allow airflow into each combustion chamber while protecting passengers from mud and dust coming in through the front of the car. Some models have grilles made out of plastic or aluminium instead of metal.
Toyota Hilux Bonnet
The function of a bonnet is to close the empty area around an engine which allows air intake for each combustion chamber while securing engine components such as the battery, timing belt covers etc. Most bonnets are made out of metal.
Toyota Hilux headlights
The function of headlights is to allow light to go through a lens and make it visible for drivers following the same road as them, allowing them to see where they are going at night or in dark conditions. Headlight lenses can be made out of plastic, glass or acrylic/plastic depending on the model.
Toyota Hilux tail light
The function of tail lights is to allow light from a bulb(s) placed inside each tail light assembly that allows drivers behind other vehicles driving in the same direction as their own vehicle to see where they are going at night or dark conditions. They’re usually attached to the rear bumper which houses the break light(s) in most models.
Toyota Hilux Radiator
The function of a radiator is to cool down water that has been used within engine combustion chambers before it returns back into an engine block for use again in the future. The water goes around tubes inside the radiator where air coming from outside of the car is blown past them, allowing for it to get cooled off and then returned back through the water pump via a hose toward the back towards each cylinder head or turbocharger depending on whether or not their model has one fitted.
Toyota Hilux Gearbox
The function of a gearbox is to allow drivers following you to change gears based on how far your foot is from the clutch, allowing for them to go faster or slower as their surrounding environment requires. They come in various gear ratios available depending on model and manufacturer.
Toyota Hilux Diff
The function of a diff is to split power to both rear wheels while accelerating, going around corners or changing direction, allowing for increased steering ability according to how much power has been pushed through it via a rear wheel by its engine(s) based on models with two engines installed. A switch usually allows a driver to select which side they want power sent towards once inside a car so that they can change direction more easily at will without having to stop themselves first before being able to do so if no switch was present. There are several types of diffs available, such as a Torsen differential, LSD (Limited Slip Differential), Truetrac and so on.
Toyota Hilux Doors
The function of doors is to allow an opening/closing mechanism via hinges placed on each side of the car for people to get in or out through them while being protected from outside elements by weather stripping material on its interior surface which stops water getting inside during heavy rain etc. When closed they have the primary function of keeping passengers inside during acceleration, braking or turning based on how hard they are pushed against depending on model. Most models have electric windows installed within them that go up and down via switches but can also be controlled manually if no switch was installed.
Toyota Hilux fenders
The function of fenders is to allow mud and water sitting on tires to be pushed away, reducing the amount of splash coming inside via windows during acceleration or braking while driving on dirty roads. They are usually made out of plastic or aluminum depending on model.
Toyota Hilux Bootlid
The function of a boot lid is to allow access into an area where luggage can be placed when travelling long distances by car. When opened it reveals an empty space that’s situated above rear bumper which allows for luggage like suitcases, bags etc to be placed in there while also protecting them from outside such as rain.
Toyota Hilux Front windscreen
The function of a front windscreen is to allow drivers inside their cars to see where they’re going in front of them while trying their level best not to crash into another vehicle coming in the opposite direction. It usually has an electrically controlled wiper that’s operated via a switch on its exterior or interior depending on model, which allows it to clear away rain at the instance when it begins falling via gravity.
Toyota Hilux Rear bumper
The function of rear bumper is to protect both tail lights and lower area of car from damage if it were ever hit by another vehicle while parked up during parking maneuvers or when changing lanes quickly without enough time to apply brakes to avoid an accident.
Toyota Hilux Front bumper
The function of a front bumper is to protect both headlights and lower area of car from damage if it were ever hit by another vehicle while parked up during parking maneuvers or when changing lanes quickly without enough time to apply brakes to avoid an accident, also allowing for a grill placed in between them that’s used as a way of cooling down engine via airflow which is pushed toward radiator at the instance when driving its fan on high speeds depending on model. It usually comes with additional components such as fog lights or driving lights, higher wattage headlamps etc, adding more weight onto front side of car depending on model due to these extra components being installed within it. It also protects radiator from damage if front of car ever received damage while parked up during parking maneuvers or when changing lanes quickly with not enough time to apply brakes in order avoid an accident, also allowing for a grill placed in between them that’s used as a way of cooling engine via airflow which is pushed towards radiator depending on model.
Toyota Hilux Aircon pump
The aircon pump cools the cabin interior of the car, usually by blowing air from the outside over some cold coolant. It often needs replacement due to age or due to a breakdown of the compressor. Things to check are the belts (generally easy to replace) and the compressor.
Toyota Hilux Shock Absorbers
The function of shock absorbers is to allow car body over bumpy terrain to be cushioned via hydraulic oil moving through metal tubing which also acts as suspension, allowing it to absorb most shocks coming from the road surface at regular speeds depending on model.
Toyota Hilux power steering
The function of power steering is to act as an aid that allows driver to turn vehicle at certain speeds via a smooth movement that’s achieved by turning wheel left or right without having too much effort going into it. It works with help from air/coolant pump attached to engine which allows a belt located within its system to start rotating along with wheels at the instance when car has been accelerated firstly, sending hydraulic fluid towards a hydraulic pump that’s powered by engine via belt, this then sends fluid towards steering rack which makes it easier for driver to turn wheels at regular speeds depending on model.
Toyota Hilux window winder mechanism
The window winder mechanism allows the car windows to be rolled up and down. It often breaks due to wear and tear as a result of the constant use.
Toyota Hilux window winder switch
The function of window winder switch is to act as an aid that allows driver to turn on/off both side windows and rear windscreen defroster by means of pushing button located within its interior, allowing warm/cool air inside cabin via vents located in bottom part of window. This also comes with additional functionality such as locking/unlocking doors via pressing down or up arrow depending on model.
Toyota Hilux Indicators
The function of indicators is to act as an aid that allows driver to indicate turning intentions by means of flashing light located within its exterior or interior depending on model.
Toyota Hilux door mirror
The function of door mirror is to allow driver to view what’s behind them when reversing/parking car via glass surface attached onto exterior cabin part known as “Door”. This acts as a backup camera during the process in order not to bump into other vehicles while parking up or changing lanes quickly without having enough time left available for brakes to be applied towards preventing accident. Door mirrors often need replacement due to damage via collisions, surface rusting due to weather conditions/spills & scratches on glass.
