Hilux gearboxes are workhorses, but heavy towing and high-mileage service eventually kills synchros, clutches, and the occasional torque converter. Transfer cases fail less frequently than gearboxes, but when they go the cost climbs — used OEM transfer cases from CPT donors typically save 50-60% versus new. Differentials (front and rear) are sold assembled by ratio, so quote your axle code or VIN. Clutch kits for the 2GD-FTV and 1GD-FTV run R3,800-R7,500 for new aftermarket (dual-mass flywheel excluded), and the JHB depot carries Luk and Valeo stock. If the dual-mass flywheel is chattering at idle, budget R9,000-R15,000 for a replacement unit.
