Prado lighting stepped through halogen, HID and LED across the generations. J90 and J120 run halogen headlights and indicators. Early J150s kept halogen projectors, facelift 2013 models introduced LED daytime running lights, and the 2017 and 2020 refreshes added full LED headlight units on VX trims. Taillight assemblies for the side-swinging tailgate J120 differ from the top-hinged J150 — specify generation clearly. Headlight levelling motors, bulbs and the auto-height sensors can all be quoted.

Are aftermarket LED headlight inserts legal for a J120 Prado in SA?

SABS-approved LED retrofits with the correct beam pattern and E-mark are legal. Many cheap LED bulb inserts fail the roadworthy beam-alignment test because they throw scatter where the halogen housing was designed for a filament bulb. Check approval markings before fitting if roadworthy matters.
