Brakes for Toyota Prado

A loaded Prado towing a trailer or full of family and camping gear needs serious stopping power. You can request Toyota Prado brakes across all three generations — ventilated front brake discs, brake calipers and pads for every trim, plus rear discs (J150 and higher-spec J120) and the rear drums on some earlier TX and base-spec J120 commercial variants. ABS modules, master cylinders, brake boosters, brake hoses and handbrake cables can all be quoted by chassis.

Brake booster units are a known Prado failure — the J120 in particular suffers vacuum loss leading to hard-pedal complaints. Used brake boosters land at R1,800-R3,500. Used front calipers typically run R1,500-R3,500. Rotors R600-R1,400 per disc. ABS modules are VIN-matched where possible. For VX rigs with the Multi-Terrain Select system, the rear caliper senders tie into traction control — specify year and trim to get the right spec.

Brakes for Toyota Prado — Frequently Asked

My Prado brake pedal goes soft after a long descent. Is the booster or master cylinder likely gone?

Often the booster on the J120 — vacuum diaphragm fatigue. Test by pumping the pedal engine-off; if it stays firm after one or two pumps then drops when you start the engine, the booster is leaking. Used boosters run R1,800-R3,500. Master cylinder failure is less common and usually shows as pedal sinking while stationary.
